Ronald Vargas is a leading global soil scientist who has dedicated over 25 years to natural resources management with a special focus on sustainable soil management. He is Secretary of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) at the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and a passionate advocate for the importance of food security and nutrition.

The Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI) is a multilateral, intergovernmental organization consisting of 14 member countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam). The mission of AFACI is to increase food production while ensuring sustainable production systems. To this end, AFACI is the main facilitator of the knowledge and technology transfer across its member countries and a key partner of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP).

As the Soil Doctors Programme enters its second year, it has successfully scaled-up farmer-to-farmer training initiatives in Bangladesh, Malawi and Mexico. The Programme will continue to strike up robust partnerships for the benefit of smallholders, empowering them to scale-up cost-effective, sustainable soil management (SSM) practices.
