Agricultural integrated survey programme (AGRISurvey)

Nepal

In Nepal, FAO is working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) and the National Statistics Office (NSO - formerly Central Bureau of Statistics - CBS), to design and implement the National Agricultural Survey (NAS) programme under the scope of the 50x2030 Initiative.

The programme objective is to contribute towards improving availability, timeliness and quality of agricultural data, and strengthen the national agricultural statistics system. Starting in 2024, Nepal officially became a member of the 50x2030 Initiative. The support received in the context of the Initiative includes technical assistance in the production of agricultural statistics in sub-provincial level, using Small Area Estimation techniques, as deemed possible and relevant.

FAO provided technical support on survey preparation and data dissemination during the 2019 Chitwan Pilot, and then in 2021 for the Commercial Integrated Livestock Survey (CLIS), which both implemented the Production Method and Environment module.

Two virtual trainings, organized by FAO, have taken place on May and June 2021, in the framework of the AGRISurvey programme in Nepal. One important objective of FAO’s AGRISurvey programme is to strengthen countries dissemination practices, including ensuring the release of agricultural survey microdata to users for analysis, research, policy design and monitoring. The programme also promotes data use activities to ensure increased and improved use of survey data to inform decision-making.

Four Day Workshop for the development of AGRIS Questionnaires jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development the Government of Nepal (MoALD), Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and FAO was kicked off on 5 March 2019 in Dhulikhel.

Start date: 2019

Status: Ongoing

Objective: Strengthen the agricultural statistical system in Nepal, by adopting best practices and standardized methods to produce data at requested sub-national level.

Partners: National Statistics Office (NSO) and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD)

The Chitwan pilot survey in 2019 successfully tested the methodology to measure key agricultural area and production indicators, and collected the necessary data to inform SDG indicators 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.4.1 and 5.a.1 (for Chitwan district only). The Commercial Livestock Integrated Survey (CLIS) in 2021 established the latest status of Nepal's commercial livestock sector, excluding poultry. Reports and metadata for both surveys are available on the NADA platform managed by NSO.

SDG 5.a.1 was computed in Nepal with FAO’ support, using data for the National Sample Census of Agriculture 2021/2022. Results are available on the FAO SDG Data Portal.
