Producing agricultural population estimates using an area frame
2023
Estimating with a high precision the number of agricultural holdings and other population-related indicators is one of the main targets of the agricultural surveys. Achieving this objective is not straightforward when using an area frame: the choice of the estimator is indeed delicate since it depends on the criterion to link the observation units (e.g. agricultural holdings or tracts) and the sampling units (e.g. segments or points).
Data driving development: Achievements and successes from FAO’s Agricultural Integrated Survey (AGRISurvey) programme
2022
This document presents the success stories and lessons learned from the implementation of the AGRISurvey programme in countries and accompanies the release of the final project report.
A guide to the 50x2030 data collection approach: questionnaire design
2022
The objective of this document is to describe the survey instruments of the 50x2030 data collection approach, including the topics covered, the implementation strategy, and potential areas for country costumization.
Combining farm and household surveys with modelling approaches to improve post-harvest loss estimates and reduce data collection costs
2022
While there is growing awareness of the issue of food losses at the political level, official post-harvest loss data for informing policymaking and reporting on SDG Indicator 12.3.1. (a) Food Loss Index is scarce. One main strategy proposed by the 50x2030 Initiative for optimizing data collection is sub-sampling for some of the survey modules.
The integration of socio-economic and agricultural surveys by national statistical offices: The case of the Uganda Harmonized Integrated Survey
2022
This paper documents the process of integrating the two surveys: the Uganda National Panel Survey (UNPS) and the Annual Agricultural Survey (AAS), and ways to improve efficiency by avoiding duplication, reducing costs, and aligning methodologies and results.
Integrated sampling design for agricultural and socio-economic households surveys: Overview and application in Uganda Harmonized Integrated Survey
2022
This paper will present an overview of the key 50x2030 Initiative technical features of the proposed integrated sampling procedures including the development of sampling frames, stratification criteria, sampling size calculations, estimation procedures and sampling approaches over time. The operational procedures will be highlighted through a presentation of an application of the methodology in the Uganda Harmonized Integrated Survey.
The 50x2030 Initiative and production of SDG 2 indicators: Country challenges and experiences
2022
An important objective of the 50x2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap is to empower partner countries’ statistical systems for evidence-based decision-making, especially to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, particularly through indicators 2.3.1, 2.3.2 and 2.4.1. The paper discusses the experiences, challenges and solutions encountered in the partner countries engaged in the 50x2030 Initiative – namely Cambodia, Ecuador, Georgia, Indonesia, Nepal, Senegal, and Uganda.
Individual land rights: Filling data gaps with the 50x2030 Initiative
2022
Land rights of individuals, and women in particular, are believed to have a direct effect on numerous aspects of development, including shock resilience, technology adoption, access to credit, and empowerment, among others. This paper highlights the work of the 50x2030 Initiative in promoting sex-disaggregated data on land rights, specifically through the measurement of individual land tenure rights in the context of SDG Indicator 5.a.1 and the land rights encompassed therein.
Technical note on post harvest losses
2021
This publication is part of a series of 50x2030 Technical Notes for Country Teams that will provide digestible, implementation-focused guidance for data producers and survey practitioners. Each note offers a brief summary of the motivation for specific survey design decisions followed by detailed, practical guidance that can be directly translated into survey design or training efforts.
Research on the measurement of post-harvest losses. Minimum losses by commodity and region: insights from the literature
2021
The reduction of agricultural losses, especially among smallholder farmers, should be an essential component of food security strategies in developing countries. The recognition of the importance of reducing food losses to achieve food security was the basis for the decision to include target 12.3 in the 2015 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda.
A guide to sampling
2021
This document discusses the key technical features of a suitable sample design for the survey programs proposed by the Initiative. Starting with the definitions of the populations of interest, it then discusses the development of sampling frames, stratification criteria, sampling size calculations, estimation procedures and sampling approaches over time. The final section covers sampling issues in relation to existing survey programs in countries that adopt the Initiative’s survey system.
Producing, using, innovating: how 50x2030 is closing the agricultural data gap
2021
This document provides an overview of the 50x2030 Initiative. Part I provides a description of its objectives and structure, while Part II describes the main thrust of the activities under the Initiative’s three components: Data Production; Methods and Tools Development; and Data Use. Comparatively more attention is devoted to the Data Production component as this will comprise the bulk of the Initiative’s activities and budget.
Use of AGRISurvey data for computing SDG’s and national indicators: Experience in three countries
2021
FAO's AGRISurvey programme supports countries in monitoring the targets set by the 2030 Development Agenda for the agricultural sector. In particular, the programme has provided support to Cambodia, Senegal and Uganda in monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Indicators 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.4.1 and 5.a.1.
Operational guidelines on listing and survey preparation for household and non-household agricultural holdings and special farms
