Aquatic health management and biosecurity

Supporting healthy, safe and high-quality aquatic food production

As the fastest-growing sector in the world's food production industry, aquaculture witnesses a growing emergence and re-emergence of infectious aquatic diseases, threatening the sector's sustainability due to intensification and globalization.

Aquaculture is characterized by wide diversity in terms of cultured species, environments, adopted systems and practices, that lead to a broad range of hazards and related perceived risks, which can be addressed through various strategies including prevention, mitigation and treatment.

Reducing disease burden by improving health management and biosecurity practices worldwide will lead to healthy production for food security, consumer health, economic development, resilient hosts and aquaculture sector sustainability.
