Monitoring the cost and affordability of healthy diets for policy action

UF1A17R FAO_WEN-205

Where we work

The new FAO-led project scales and institutionalizes the work within national statistical systems and policy processes.

The FAO Statistics Division is working to establish and support national CoAHD monitoring systems in selected countries, while strengthening national statistical capacity and data systems.

Expected outcomes:

  • National CoAHD monitoring systems are established in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, including those that have already started monitoring Cost of a Healthy Diet.
  • National institutions are equipped to sustain monitoring independently (long-term sustainability).
  • Policy relevance: National institutions are equipped to use data and evidence to shape food and nutrition policies and investments, including policy optimization modeling conducted in 4 countries.
  • Any country wishing to monitor CoAHD has the guidance and resources to begin, including learning from other countries

A sister project at Tufts University will expand research on causes and solutions for high costs and low affordability at country level.

Country-level work under the Food Prices for Nutrition project

30/08/2024

Governments around the world collect food price data on a frequent basis, often monthly, for the purpose of monitoring inflation. These routine economic data can be used with a nutrition-sensitive lens for understanding economic access to a healthy diet. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has adopted the cost and affordability of a healthy diet (CoAHD) for annual tracking alongside other food security indicators.
