14 November 2022, Rome - The GEF-funded Coastal Fisheries Initiative (CFI) is organizing a global exchange visit in which Peru will host fishing community members from Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Indonesia and Senegal from 29 November-2 December.

Participants will include fishers and fish workers, private sector actors, government representatives, and CFI implementing agencies.

The in-person visit takes place within the framework of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022) and will consist of workshops and field visits in the Tumbes National Mangrove Sanctuary in Peru, one CFI Latin America’s pilot sites.

Its objective is to foster an exchange of experience and knowledge on good practices at country, regional and global levels in pursuit of the overall CFI goal of developing more holistic processes and integrated approaches to sustainable coastal fisheries management.

"This global exchange visit is an opportunity for fishers and fish workers from diverse countries to meet and compare notes on how they tackle the challenges that all small-scale artisanal fisheries have in common: how to practice their craft in a sustainable way, while improving their working conditions and their livelihoods," said FAO CFI Global Coordinator Fatou Sock.

"We will be talking about what works, what doesn't, what still needs to be done, and what can be shared and implemented across borders. We all want the same thing: to preserve the marine food chain in order to secure sustainable fisheries for current and future generations."

It brings together UN agencies, international conservation organizations, governments and fisher communities at the forefront of efforts to improve coastal fisheries management and conserve marine biodiversity in six countries: Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Indonesia, Peru and Senegal.
