EAF-Nansen Programme

The Programme addresses all dimensions of capacity development (individual, institutional and the enabling environment). To meet the huge demand within technical disciplines in fisheries and marine environmental research and management in developing countries, a Technical Training Network composed of universities and other training institutions in partner countries provides short- and medium-term courses in several disciplines.

The Programme also supports mechanisms for knowledge and information sharing. This is an important and cross-cutting component of the programme, underlying most if its planned outcomes and outputs.

Gender

The Programme recognizes the importance of ensuring gender equality, which is central to the mandate of FAO to achieve food security for all by promoting women's empowerment throughout all areas of work and strengthening human and institutional capacities in partner countries.

Building on the existing good practices developed by FAO and other partners, the Programme integrates gender sensitive needs assessment and planning into training and other capacity development activities.

EAF-Nansen Women's Alumni Network

The EAF-Nansen Women’s Alumni Network was launched in 2026 to empower, connect, and advance women working in fisheries science, management, and related fields. It brings together women who have participated in Programme activities, along with experienced mentors, to foster mentorship, peer support, and collaboration across regions and disciplines.

By strengthening women’s leadership, visibility, and access to professional opportunities, the Women's Alumni Network supports career development and contributes to more equitable, inclusive, and effective fisheries governance [more].
