Descripción general
El sector lácteo de Kenya es uno de los más desarrollados del África subsahariana y contribuye al sustento de casi 2 millones de personas en toda la cadena de valor. El sector aporta el 14 % del PIB agrícola nacional. La producción de leche en Kenya está gestionada predominantemente por pequeños ganaderos que son responsables de cerca del 70 % de la producción láctea del país. En general, la productividad de las vacas lecheras es baja y provoca una escasez de oferta de productos lácteos. El rendimiento lechero oscila entre menos de 1 y 10 litros por vaca y día en sistemas extensivos, y entre 9 y 18 litros por vaca y día en sistemas intensivos. Los rendimientos lecheros son muy variables debido a la limitada disponibilidad de recursos alimenticios, las enfermedades y la mala gestión de las explotaciones.
 
Datos de referencia de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero
En 2015, los sistemas de ganado lechero de Kenya fueron responsables de unos 12,3 millones de toneladas equivalentes de dióxido de carbono (CO2-eq.) de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Más del 85 % de estas emisiones proceden del metano entérico y casi el 11 % de la gestión del estiércol almacenado. Los sistemas de pastoreo extensivo presentaron la mayor intensidad de emisión, mientras que los valores más bajos se encontraron en los sistemas semiintensivos. A nivel nacional, la intensidad de las emisiones de la leche era de una media de 4 kg de CO2-eq. por kilogramo de leche corregida en grasa y proteínas (LCGP). Las intensidades medias de emisión fueron las siguientes: 
 
7 kg CO2-eq/kg LCGP para el sistema extensivo
 
2 kg CO2-eq/kg LCGP para el sistema intensivo
 
4 kg CO2-eq/kg LCGP para el sistema semiintensivo
 
Intervenciones de mitigación 
El uso de residuos de cultivos tratados con urea puede reducir las intensidades de emisión de Kenya en un 8 %, mientras que la suplementación con vides de batata y ensilado de sorgo puede disminuirlas en casi un 50 %. El estudio reveló que todas las intervenciones mostraban un resultado de productividad positivo, con aumentos en la producción lechera que oscilaban entre el 6 (residuos de cultivos tratados con urea) y el 95 % (suplementación con vides de batata y ensilado de sorgo). Además, el establecimiento de huertos de gramíneas y leguminosas forrajeras, la vacunación contra la fiebre de la costa oriental africana y la mejora genética aumentarían la producción lechera en un 30 % y reducirían la intensidad de las emisiones hasta en un 36 %.
