Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA)

Methodology for the development of GSA

A part of the process of developing the GSA is the organization regional consultations. The documented case studies and lessons learned during the regional consultations will be compiled into lessons learned with regard to the existing FAO codes and frameworks, notably the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) and the Common Vision for Sustainable Food and Agriculture.

The documented case studies will also be used to develop recommended pathways towards successful implementation of sustainable aquaculture. In addition to case studies that have already been fully developed, workshop participants could bring 1- or 2-page case study concepts, and through discussion at the regional consultation, thematic modules most appropriate for the case study lessons learned will be determined.

Regional Consultation Objectives

The objectives of the regional consultation are:

  • Share current policies and practices related to aquaculture in the region to inform Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA), currently under development by the FAO Secretariat.
  • Review existing regional sustainable aquaculture guidance that has been developed, and assess if there are gaps that the GSA could help fill.
  • Develop a list of priority thematic modules, both those of regional strength and those that are regional challenges. iv. Propose case studies from the region.
