IGG Intersessional meeting on fibers triggers interest in FAO engagement on policy work in Mozambique

09 Jan 2019
On the 14 November, the MAFAP programme was invited to present its work at the Intersessional meeting of the intergovernmental group (IGG) on Hard Fibres and the IGG on Jute, Kenaf and Allied Fibres. The IGG is not only a platform to discuss current issues that affect fibres but is also a forum to explore and consolidate strategic partnerships with FAO.

During the meeting, MAFAP presented an overview of its work on policy issue identification, articulation of policy options and the typical process of engagement at country level, using the planned work on sisal in Mozambique as an example. The presentation raised the interest and provided an opportunity to discuss how FAO policy assistance can be requested.

The meeting was attended for the first time by representatives from the Mozambican Cotton Institute (IAM) and therefore provided a useful opportunity to learn from the experience of other countries. Following the IGG meeting, the MAFAP team held separate discussions with representatives from the IAM to better define the scope of the upcoming work on assessing the policy options to revitalize the sisal value chain in Mozambique. The MAFAP programme is expected to assist the Government by analysing the economic potential of sisal in Mozambique, conducting a profitability analysis and suggesting policy options to develop the sisal value chain as a potential opportunity to diversify export revenues from agriculture.
