The MedSudMed programme, has developed a cohort of regional experts in fishery science and management through its capacity development activities.

One significant aspect of the programme's approach is its emphasis on generational capacity development, specifically targeting the training of young experts that are called to take governance and management decisions.

The MedSudMed -supported capacity development programme encompassed all aspects of fisheries and aquaculture, including economic, social, and environmental dimensions. It laid the foundation for a Blue Transformation and addressed all levels of capacity development (individual, institutional, and the related facilitating conditions) through both theoretical and hands-on or on-the-job activities. This comprehensive approach has significantly contributed to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices in the region".

Among the several initiatives, MedSudMed, launched the first Summer School in Quantitative Fisheries Stock Assessment in the Mediterranean organized, together with the other FAO Mediterranean Projects, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean and the European Commission Joint Research Center.
