Improved Pesticides and Chemicals Management in the Former Soviet Union

Outcome 1: Management of Obsolete Pesticides

A major focus of the programme is the development of national and regional capacity to reduce the risk posed by obsolete pesticides, which includes:

  • The development of comprehensive inventories of obsolete stockpiles and sites where pesticides have been buried, to allow an objective, risk-based prioritization of all locations;
  • The development of environmental assessments and management plans aimed at developing risk- reduction strategies;
  • The implementation of a series of demonstration safeguarding projects to illustrate internationally recognised standards of health, safety and environmental compliance, and to significantly reduce risks from obsolete pesticide stocks; and
  • Environmentally sound disposal for obsolete pesticides in accordance with the Basel Convention and EU waste management standards.

Outcome 1 will rely on national teams to support implementation of each Output.

FAO will:

  • Provide support to complete all activities to the highest international standards, with the aim of developing capacity at national and regional level, which can support the scaling up of activities in the future; and
  • Work with development partners to identify follow-on projects aimed at developing national and regional capacity to manage similar wastes in the future.
