Antiguan farmers are now better equipped with the knowledge and tools to maintain their solar-powered drip irrigation systems. This is thanks to the FAO-supported training on the operation and maintenance of these innovative systems. The training complements previous capacity-building activities provided by FAO on climate-resilient practices for the sustainable management of water, soil and energy in the farm.

Over the last three years, more than 130 farmers, extension staff and technical officers across four Caribbean countries have been able to enhance their knowledge and tools to implement climate-resilient agricultural technologies and practices. This achievement among others, is thanks to the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus Subproject of the Mexico-CARICOM-FAO Initiative “Cooperation for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in the Caribbean”, also known as the Resilient Caribbean Initiative (RCI). The subproject, now in its final stages, has delivered positive results for the agriculture sector in the region, particularly in Barbados, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda.

Bridgetown, Barbados – With a growing need for investment to address climate impacts, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its Subregional Office for the Caribbean (SLC), recently concluded a two-day webinar entitled ‘Adapting Caribbean Food Systems to Climate Change: Challenges, Solutions and Funding Opportunities’. The virtual event took place on February 27 and 28, 2024 and brought together more than sixty regional stakeholders from relevant Ministries, academia, civil society organizations, CARICOM Secretariat and South-South Cooperation partners.

Bridgetown, Barbados  Recognizing the importance of monitoring and evaluating (M&E) the impact of the water-energy-food nexus (WEF) interventions on food security and resource use in agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) signed a Letter of Agreement with the Dutch institution, Free University Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) to build an M&E framework tailored to the unique context of the Caribbean.

Paramaribo, Suriname - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Government of Mexico and the Government of Suriname support the establishment of school gardens across 7 primary schools and 1 education centre in Suriname as a learning tool for food and nutrition education.  The initiative is part of the “Resilient School Feeding Programme” sub-project of the Mexico-CARICOM-FAO “Cooperation for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience in the Caribbean” or Resilient Caribbean Initiative in short which seek to collaborate with countries in the Caribbean in their efforts to promote school feeding programs for healthy diets while creating synergy will local farmers.

Castries, Saint Lucia – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) provides countries with technical support to conduct nutrition and health assessments for in-depth analysis of community-based food and nutrition programmes. Under the ‘Resilient School Feeding Programme’ sub-project of the Mexico-CARICOM-FAO “Cooperation for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience in the Caribbean”, or Resilient Caribbean Initiative in short, sustainable healthy diets, core food skills, and the use of local food sources are promoted. The programme focuses on building the capacity development of government in combating multiple forms of malnutrition alongside other development challenges.

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - Business plan development training for aquaponics farmers was held from October through to December 2022 for Caribbean countries participating in the projects ‘Harnessing Blue Economy Finance for SIDS Recovery and Sustainable Development’ and ‘Resilient Aquaculture for Food Security and Well-being in the Caribbean’. Both projects are being implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Bridgetown, Barbados - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been an important partner in Barbados’ drive to achieve its agricultural and marine development priorities, including natural resource management and climate change adaptation. This partnership has continued under the ‘Addressing the Water-Energy-Food Nexus’ (WEF) sub-project of the “Mexico - CARICOM - FAO Initiative Cooperation for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in the Caribbean.” The initiative targets actions that contribute to reducing the impacts of global shocks such as climate change and COVID-19 on household livelihoods, food and water availability, including practices in technologies for improved water productivity. Critical to achieving this is the implementation of best practices training within the agriculture sector to ensure environmental management.

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – With a commitment to the protection of the population’s health, the Ministry of Health together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and with the support of the Government of Mexico through the Resilient School Feeding Programmes sub-project under the Mexico-FAO-CARICOM Initiative: “Cooperation for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in the Caribbean” has been working to promote nutrition education and healthy diets, specifically within schools to develop a new culture and attitude toward healthy diets.
