The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has urged Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States to step up collective action against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), as outbreaks continue to threaten livestock production, rural livelihoods, food security and trade across the region.

Zambia is making significant progress in strengthening agricultural governance, plant health regulation and data-driven decision-making through the European Union-funded Support Towards Operationalisation of the Strategic Plan and Transition to Sustainable Agricultural Transformation and Institutional Reform (STOSAR II) Project. Implemented with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the project recently facilitated two technical workshops in Kafue that brought together government representatives and key stakeholders to advance regulatory reforms and improve agricultural information management systems.

From 8 to 20 March 2026, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with Angola’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MINAGRIF), conducted a Food Balance Sheets (FBS) Training and Compilation Workshop in Luanda under the European Union-funded Support Towards the Operationalization of the SADC Regional Agricultural Policy Phase II (STOSAR II) Project. The workshop brought together members of Angola’s National Food Balance Sheets Technical Working Group (TWG), including statisticians and technical experts from government institutions, academia and research organizations. 

Fruit flies pose an ongoing and growing threat to southern Africa's horticultural sector, particularly in Angola, where high-value crops such as mangoes, citrus, and avocados support livelihoods, food security, and exports. The invasive Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) has caused significant yield losses, higher production costs, and stricter phytosanitary measures, affecting Angola’s market access and competitiveness.

The second annual meeting of the Coordinating Unit for Animal Production and Health (CUFAPH) under the FAO Subregional Office for Southern Africa (SFS) was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, bringing together 30 national animal health experts from across Southern Africa, regional organizations, and FAO technical staff.

 

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has launched the second phase of the European Union (EU)-funded project Support Towards the Operationalization of the SADC Regional Agricultural Policy (STOSAR II). The launch, held in Gaborone, Botswana, marked a renewed commitment to advancing food and nutrition security, strengthening food security systems, enhancing climate resilience, and boosting regional agricultural value chains and market access across in the SADC region. The second phase builds on the achievements of STOSAR I, which was implemented from December 2018 to February 2024.
