Albania

Aquaculture production in Albania has grown significantly in the past two decades, reaching nearly 9,300 tonnes in 2020 or around 55% of the total national fisheries and aquaculture output.

Rainbow trout is one of the main cultured species in Albania, constituting 17% of aquaculture production in 2020. There has been a significant increase in trout production in the past few years, from 600 tonnes in 2017 to about 1,612 tonnes in 2020. Rainbow trout produced in Albania are destined for consumption on the domestic market and for export.

Sustainable expansion and intensification of rainbow trout farming can contribute to better nutrition for the local population, as well as increase employment and ensure steady incomes. SVC4MED will support the full utilisation of the potential social and economic benefits from the rainbow trout value chain while safeguarding the natural environment.
