Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Value Chains for the Mediterranean (SVC4MED)

Around 800 tonnes of farmed rainbow trout were produced in Lebanon in 2020, represents 96% of the total aquaculture production in Lebanon. Rainbow trout are grown in semi-intensive systems in some 350 farms (2022).

Imports made up more than 90% of the fish available for consumption in Lebanon in 2017. This implies that the national production does not meet the demand, becoming heavily dependent on the imports from abroad. Despite their general preference for marine fish, consumers in Lebanon are becoming more aware of rainbow trout. Increasing consumers’ interest in trout could provide potentials for economic growth and contribute to national food security.

SVC4MED seeks out to address the challenges and opportunities in the rainbow trout value chain to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the sector. The value chain development of the project includes not only economic but also social and environmental upgrading strategies.
