Use remote sensing for crop mapping, ET and WP

2019 – 2020

Detailed land use and crop mapping using remote sensing was prepared for Al Mashare’ pilot site for two cropping seasons.

 

2019

A team of two national experts participated in a five-block regional training on theoretical and practical knowledge on the protocols and remote sensing techniques for crop classification and mapping. Jordan hosted the final block of the practical training for 18 participants from seven countries.

 

2019

A team of 10 national experts joined 18 participants from seven countries for a regional training to enhance knowledge on the use of the WaPOR portal to assess water productivity using remote sensing, for targeted interventions on more efficient water use.

 

ET measurement and validation

2019

An ET Network was installed in the pilot site - Deir Alla (NARC station- Jordan Valley) which aimed at measuring ET for wheat and maize crops, comparing with different ET instruments and calibration of a new instrument - ET Cordova station, which is an improved agro-meteor station completed by sensors.

 

2019

A team of two national experts were trained on ET measurement using different instruments, and on the fabrication and installation of the Cordova ET station. Other trainings took place in Cairo, Cordoba and Tunis in 2019.

 

2019-2022

The ET Cordova station was calibrated and validated against lysimeter measurements for five growing seasons and four crops (wheat, maize, vetch and onion) at the Dier Alla (NARC station-Jordan Valley). 

 

 

 

 

Water Accounting & Auditing

 

Piloting Water Accounting & Auditing

2019

A case study on rapid water accounting was realized in Al Mashare’ area. A report has been developed. .

 

2020 - 2021

The project is establishing a robust water accounting system providing the evidence base for the full water budgeting for Northern Jordan Valley District.

 

 

2021

The water accounting second cycle for the North Jordan Valley (NJV) was carried out and a report has been developed. Water accounting for the NJV was carried out using water supply data obtained from JVA and MWI, water demand data calculated from climatic data of Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) and land use and evapotranspiration data obtained from remote sensing based models. The overall aim of the work was to support efforts towards water and food security needed for sustainable social and economic development in Jordan and to identify capacity buildings needs for institutionalizing water accounting by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation.

 

 

2021-2022

Water accounting third cycle (WA+) was carried out and a report has been developed. The overall aim of the work was to provide full assessment for agricultural water use in north Jordan Valley (NJV) and to provide solutions for water deficiency. The ultimate goal of the work was to institutionalize the water accounting (WA) systems at the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, so that open source data and WA tools would be fully utilized for water management in Jordan.

Water accounting fourth cycle (WA+) aims at conducting multiple years WA+ analysis for the north Jordan Valley by the ministry of water and irrigation team. Ongoing

 

 

2021

Water auditing (problem identification). Data were collected through conducting several meetings with different stakeholders and farmers to identify the reasons of water shortage from different perspectives and to identify possible measures to deal with water shortage.

 

 

2021-2022

Water auditing/governance analysis was carried out and a report has been developed. The overall aim of this work was to present and analyze different perspectives and to address the problem of water shortage and water governance and to provide some solutions to mitigate the impact of these problems.  

 

 

 

Water Accounting Institutionalization

2020 - 2021

The project is supporting the establishment of a Water Accounting Unit or functions at the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation.

 

Training on Water Accounting and auditing

2018

A total of 22 experts from different institutions were trained on the water accounting principles and methodologies (theory and practical exercises).

 

2019

Four national experts were trained to become analysts on advanced water accounting and auditing in a regional training implemented by FAO with IHE-Delft and IWMI-MENA in Cairo, Egypt.

 

2020

Twenty-eight national experts were trained on the water accounting assessment process covering rapid water accounting and advanced water accounting, and its different approaches through working with actual water accounting case studies and reviewing international experiences. The training was implemented with IWMI in Amman, Jordan.

 

 

2021

Forty two national experts (40% females), from multiple Jordanian and Palestinian national institutions representing the diversity of the water-agriculture-environmental issues, were trained on water governance analysis. The training aimed at strengthening the capacities and knowledge of selected government and non-governmental actors in Jordan and Palestine who are going to support the water governance/auditing process.

 

 

 

2021

A two-days physical training on Water accounting for the water accounting team at ministry of water and irrigation, where six participants attended.  The overall objective of the training was to support MWI activities in the areas of water management and planning by building the capacity of its staff in the areas of using the open source data of FAO WaPOR needed for water accounting analysis. The trainer was the national consultant on water accounting.

 

 

2022

A three-day physical training for 27 trainees from several national ministries/institutes under the title of advanced water accounting was conducted. The overall objective was to provide trainees with background and full procedures of advanced water accounting for irrigated areas, taking North Jordan Valley as an example.

 

Water Harvesting

2019

The first small-scale water harvesting structure of the Jordan valley was developed in cooperation with the MWI and Jordan Valley Authority (JVA). The structure stores about 100 thousand m3 of rainwater and connects to the JVA delivery system. It provides additional amount of fresh water for agriculture for improved food security in the area.

 

Water Productivity

 

Crop Water Productivity (Baseline)

2019

A baseline of crop water productivity at country level was implemented gathering results from existing literature and research done in the country on strategic crops. Report has been developed.

 

2018

A team of three experts were trained on the concepts and methodologies of water productivity in a regional training in Cordoba, Spain.

 

2019

Five experts shared their water productivity experience at the regional water productivity conference, and have successfully joined the water productivity community of practice.

 

Crop Water Productivity (Site level)

2019

Assessment of socio-economic and gender context of Al Mashare’ pilot site was done.

 

2020

Thirty water productivity farmer surveys were conducted in the pilot Site (Pump33 – Al Mashare’ area - Northern Jordan Valley). The survey aimed at identifying farmer practices and other issues that affect farming in order to assess the current level of water productivity and to identify opportunities for improvement.

 

2020-2022

Water productivity site-level assessment was carried out and a report has been developed. The site level assessment and farmers survey provided detailed information needed to assess the actual water productivity for the majority of crops in the target area (Al Mashare’, pump number 33 in North Jordan Valley) and to assess the gap in water productivity. Current Farming practices were also considered to be compared with the best farming practices for water productivity improvements.

 

2022

Modelling crop water productivity using the Aquacrop model is ongoing.

Eighteen extension staff from the Ministry of Agriculture were trained on the proper irrigation management practices and water productivity assessment by using AquaCrop model and other methods.

Two-day field mission to measure the efficiency of a selected on-farm irrigation systems and to conduct farmers’ survey to evaluate the irrigation management practices in Al Mashare area.

 A small-scale agro-silvo-pastoral test site (one hectare) aiming at enhancing water use efficiency and productivity in dryland agriculture was established in Al-Mashare’ area. In addition, an ex-ante assessment of the potential for large-scale impacts on the areas’ Eco-hydrology was established.

 An energy-efficient food drying units (sun-drying units) were established in Al-Mashare’ area aiming at enhancing productivity and food quality/value for local consumption and potential income generation- adapted to more rehabilitated and sustainably managed agro-silvo-pastoral environments. Related capacity-building program for nine local women was also conducted.

 

 

2022

Two-day physical training course on dairy processing was conducted for twenty one trainees (18 women and 3 men) of the local community of Al-Mashare’ area. In addition, dairy processing units were established at a community based organization (CBO) in the target area. The overall aim was enhancing the socio-economic livelihoods and resilience of rural communities in the north Jordan Valley.

 

 

2022

A four-day advanced training on dairy processing for eleven women of the local community of Al-Mashare’ area was conducted. The main goal was to improve dairy production, hygiene and profitability providing an opportunity to improve women’s livelihoods in Jordan Valley.

 

Farmer level experimentation on WP (FFS)

2018  - 2022

Ten farmer field schools for improved water productivity and for implementing Good Agricultural Practices and water management were implemented in the pilot site on okra, pepper, potato, eggplant, citrus, and grape.. Each school included around 20- 25 participants, where around 25 meetings were conducted for each school over the cropping season. Two facilitators were involved to guide farmers. A Training for 20 Jordanian facilitators was organized on farmer field schools methodology in Al Mashare’ area.

One livestock FFS for herders (20 women) was established in Al-Mashare´area in the north Jordan Valley with an overall objective of adopting good breeding practices and having informed decision making, through the participatory community based approach. It aims at supporting small-scale family farmers in managing herds, promoting income generation and reducing poverty through improving their skills and knowledge. Ongoing.

 

 

 

2022

An evaluation mission for the Farmer Field Schools (FFS) implemented in Jordan and Palestine was conducted. The main objective of the mission was to evaluate the implementation of the FFS in Jordan and Palestine in terms of achievements, application of FAO’s FFS approach, steps, exercises and reporting, as well as identification of challenges and lessons learnt.

 

NEXUS

Desktop studies were conducted with the aim of analyzing each sector - water, agriculture, and energy, and their interlinkages in the country.

 

2019 – 2021

Process of Multidisciplinary Nexus Dialogue (Assessing Water Sustainability using a Water-Food-Energy-Climate-Ecosystems Nexus analytical framework) was conducted with: 1) first a dialogue to assess nexus issues (March 2019); 2) then decide on scenarios and vulnerability (December 2019); and finally 3) validate the integrated model and scenarios ( 2021).

 

2019 -2021

Analysis and development of modeling strategy, and the data gap filling in consultation with the different Nexus-related potential stakeholders in the country was conducted.

 

 

2021

National final Nexus workshop (strategy assessment), over 2 days (May 2021) was virtually conducted. The first day was a training on the Nexus models and tools. In the second day, the final results of the WEF Nexus for Jordan were presented and discussed.
