International Mountain Day celebrated in Argentina
VICAM (Vicuñas, camélidos y ambiente), a member of the Mountain Partnership, works with Andean communities on the Argentinean Altiplano to help them conserve their environment, especially in relation to wild camelids and vicuñas. In celebration of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development and International Mountain Day 2022, VICAM organized the following events.
In-school activity
On 11 August 2022, VICAM organized an intensive day of interventions with the third and fourth grade students at the primary school of General Roudeau de Santa Catalina, Jujuy Province.
The children shared their opinions on what the experience of living in the mountains is like and talked about the roles of mountain ecosystems.
Moreover, the students built a pedagogical space of trust in which they could relax in and let their curiosity guide the activity. In order to leave a record of this experience, the students created a collage.
Spinning contest "Pushkaj Runakuna"
On 12 August 2022, a joint activity within the Community Council was held: a traditional Quechuan spinning contest named “Pushkaj Runakuna”.
The community council promoted the contest to its members, with an invitation open to the public.
The contest was successfully held like previous years, and all participants received certificates acknowledging their contributions to the celebration of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development and the International Mountain Day 2022.
