Our Office

As the leading agency in food security and agriculture, FAO is committed to empowering vulnerable communities and building climate-resilient livelihoods. Through targeted income-generating initiatives and the restoration of traditional irrigation systems, we help resettled displaced households adapt to environmental challenges while securing sustainable futures.

Climate change has intensified food insecurity, making it crucial to implement adaptive and sustainable agricultural practices. FAO integrates climate-smart solutions into its programs, ensuring that farmers can withstand unpredictable weather patterns, droughts, and other climate-related shocks.

Key Areas of Intervention

  • Enhancing winter cereal crop production (wheat) with drought-resistant and climate-smart varieties

  • Expanding backyard poultry farming as a climate-resilient and low-carbon food production system

  • Boosting vegetable production using water-efficient irrigation and soil conservation techniques

  • Strengthening small-scale livestock herding with sustainable pasture management and climate-adaptive fodder production

  • Scaling up agroforestry and reforestation efforts to combat desertification and enhance carbon sequestration

  • Promoting renewable energy solutions (such as solar-powered irrigation)

  • Co-coordinating the Food and Agriculture Sector to ensure a climate-informed, integrated, and strategic response

Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. FAO works closely with Iraqi Government, sister UN agencies and Sector Working Groups to implement climate-smart interventions and maximize impact. Our joint programs, supported by international NGOs and local partners, extend our reach into governorates and districts facing climate vulnerabilities.

Through these efforts, FAO remains dedicated to fostering resilience, mitigating climate risks, and securing a food-secure future for all.
