Learning Route on gender transformative approaches in Brazil

16 OCTOBER 2023

How to address gender inequality in rural areas? A Learning Route in Brazil, organized by Procasur within the framework of the Joint Programme, seeks answers and solutions to this question.

A group of 21 people from 12 Latin American and African countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Peru, and Sao Tome and Principe) will travel through northeastern Brazil to learn from successful experiences that have successfully transformed gender relations in family farming, food security, and community and economic affairs. The group of participants includes representatives of governments, farmers’ and women’s organizations, United Nations agencies and the European Union, among others.

The “Learning Route on Gender Transformative Approaches to Achieving Food Security, Improved Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture” is organized by Procasur, an international organization specializing in innovation and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. The activity will take place within the framework of the Joint Programme on Gender Transformative Approaches for Food Security and Nutrition (JP GTA), which is implemented by FAO, IFAD and WFP in collaboration with and through financial support from the European Union.

The JP GTA seeks to contribute to gender equality in agrifood systems by tackling the root causes of gender discrimination and triggering transformative change processes that lead to gender equality and women’s empowerment. To do so, it is key to strengthen the capacities of key actors to design and implement gender transformative policies and investments.

The Learning Route will take place from 16 to 22 October 2023 and will visit initiatives of women’s groups and rural communities in the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco, with the support of the Brazilian government and social organizations, such as the Centro Feminista 8 de Marzo and Casa da Mulher do Nordeste.

Participants will learn about cases that address issues such as sharing household chores, equal participation of women in decision-making spaces, and prevention of gender-based violence.

What can a cooperative do to promote more equitable gender relations within its organization? What changes take place within a household when women and men share household chores and childcare? What policies, investments and methodologies make this possible? These and other questions will be addressed during the Learning Route with the aim of inspiring participants to implement concrete changes in their organizations, projects and communities.

The Learning Route is a peer-to-peer exchange tool that allows successful local solutions to be adapted to other contexts, expanding their scale and impact. This initiative is part of the JP GTA's efforts to increase capacities in Latin America and the Caribbean to achieve gender equality in agrifood systems.
