Bishkek – The FAO project “Carbon Sequestration through Climate Investments in Forests and Rangelands in the Kyrgyz Republic” (CS-FOR) will develop a national reforestation and afforestation Program to help the Kyrgyz Republic achieve its NDC target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 43.62 percent by 2030 through carbon sequestration by forests.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), within the framework of the CS-FOR project, signed an agreement with the Scientific and Production Center for Forest Research, Institute of Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic to ensure the development of this Program.

As part of the agreement, Institute of Forest will conduct a study to determine the potential of the Kyrgyz Republic for reforestation and afforestation to achieve the NDC goal. Additionally, Institute of Forest will conduct research to develop planting standards for spruce, juniper, walnut, pistachio, and poplar to meet the CS-FOR project's goal of sequestering 5 million tons of CO₂ over 20 years. A methodology will be developed to determine the survival rate of forest plantations under changing climate conditions.

Under the FAO CS-FOR project, reforestation activities are planned for an area of 6,000 hectares. Within five years, new forests (spruce, juniper, walnut, pistachio, and poplar) will be planted in the target areas of the forestry enterprises, covering 3,440 hectares. In addition, measures will be taken to promote natural reforestation on an area of 2,560 hectares. It is also planned to implement improved forest management practices over an area of more than 56,000 hectares.
