🌏 Mongolia launches new South–South Cooperation project to strengthen sustainable soil management

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry of Mongolia, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations successfully organized the launch meeting of the project “Capacity Development on Sustainable Soil Management in the Global South (SSC Soil)” funded by People’s Republic of China, in Ulaanbaatar.

The event brought together representatives from MoFALI, FAO Headquarters, and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Mongolia to strengthen cooperation on soil health and sustainable agricultural development.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Jambaltseren Tumur-Uya, State Secretary of MoFALI; H.E. Shen Minjuan, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Mongolia; Mr. Lifeng Li, Director of FAO’s Land and Water Division; Mr. Yahui Zhang, Senior Coordinator of FAO’s South–South and Triangular Cooperation Division; and Ms. Qingyun Diao, FAO Representative in Mongolia.

The discussion covered several key topics, including project implementation and the work plan, soil fertility and fertilizer research, and the “Global Soil Doctor” initiative. The meeting aimed to strengthen collective efforts to improve soil health and promote sustainable agricultural development in Mongolia.

On 26 May 2024, the Government of Mongolia and FAO signed an agreement to implement the project “Capacity Development on Sustainable Soil Management in the Global South” (SSC Soil). This collaboration marks an important step toward enhancing soil laboratory capacity, promoting good agricultural practices, strengthening technical expertise, and advancing the agricultural extension system to a new level.

Through this initiative, Mongolia seeks to build a stronger foundation for sustainable soil management and to reinforce joint efforts for improving soil health and supporting sustainable agriculture across the Global South.
