The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, has welcomed an €8 million contribution from the European Union (EU) that will enable countries in the Horn of Africa to maintain a state of readiness in the face of a possible resurgence of Desert Locusts.

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, spoke at the virtual launch of a new FAO-led publication entitled “Veterinary Vaccines: Principles and Applications”.

Although severe hunger has not been a major issue in Europe and Central Asia in the past 20 years, the region is in part facing an increase of moderate food insecurity – understood as irregular access to nutritious and sufficient food –, while also dealing with the widespread rapid growth of obesity, challenging its ability to achieve food security and improved nutrition, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2.

“It’s a way to build solidarity and get to know each other,” FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said to a virtual Town Hall audience of thousands of FAO employees who had logged in from homes and FAO offices in more than 130 countries.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) today marked the first UN International Day of Argania by participating in a high-level virtual event in Morocco that highlighted the importance of argan trees in preserving biodiversity and providing livelihoods.

FAO Director-General urges measures to tackle agricultural underfunding

After an extensive consultative and iterative process over the last two years, the Vision and Strategy for FAO's Work in Nutrition (FAO’s Nutrition Strategy) was endorsed at the 166th Session of the FAO Council last week.

"Harnessing science, technology and innovation is key for transforming our agri-food systems. Today's challenges remind us more than ever that to achieve the ambitious transformative changes required, we need to change policies, mindsets, behaviors and business models," said the Chief Scientist.
