Food-based dietary guidelines - Denmark

Official name

The official dietary guidelines (Danish: De officielle kostråd).

Publication year

Denmark published its first set of dietary guidelines in the 1970s. They were revised in 1995, 2005 and 2008. They were revised again in 2011–13 based on the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2012 and the revised version was published in September 2013.

Process and stakeholders

The guidelines were developed in a process led by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. It also involved the Ministry of Health, universities, nutrition institutes, consumer organizations, non-governmental organizations and the food industry.

The Danish dietary guidelines are endorsed by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.

Intended audience

The guidelines are directed at the healthy population over 3 years of age.


  • Eat a variety of foods, but not too much, and be physically active.
  • Eat fruits and lots of vegetables.
  • Eat more fish.
  • Choose whole grains.
  • Choose lean meats and cold meats.
  • Choose low-fat dairy products.
  • Eat less saturated fat.
  • Eat foods with less salt.
  • Eat less sugar.
  • Drink water.
