This section provides information about food-based dietary guidelines and food guides from the region of Latin America and the Caribbean.
A study conducted by FAO in 2012 about the state of dietary guidelines in Latin America and the Caribbean 21 years after the International Conference on Nutrition showed that the objectives and messages of the guidelines are shifting in orientation from prevention of undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies to obesity and non-communicable diseases, which reflects the nutrition transition that the region is experiencing. The report also highlights that more work is needed on the implementation and evaluation of dietary guidelines in the region.
As of 2020, over 25 countries in the region have national dietary guidelines.
We invite governments to send us their new or revised dietary guidelines and to notify updates on the information pertaining to their countries.
