Breadfruit
Tuvalu : Breadfruit
Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a culturally and economically significant field crop in Tuvalu. Symbolizing resilience and sustainability, it plays a key role in fostering food security, climate adaptation and community cohesion. Breadfruit is commonly shared during feasts and ceremonies, reinforcing strong social ties among Tuvaluans. Its culinary versatility—eaten boiled, baked, fried, or roasted—makes it a daily dietary staple.Tuvalu has a comparative advantage in breadfruit cultivation due to its tropical climate, saline-tolerant soils and limited agricultural alternatives. The breadfruit tree requires minimal inputs, is highly productive, and thrives in the country’s challenging environmental conditions including drought, high winds and poor soil. Given the scarcity of arable land, breadfruit’s low land-use demand and high yield make it an ideal crop for both rural and urban/peri-urban areas in Tuvalu.
Agroclimatic Features:
Breadfruit thrives in Tuvalu’s tropical climate, favouring deep, well-drained sandy soils and full sun exposure. It requires an annual rainfall of between 1500–2500 mm for optimal growth and fruit production. The trees also offer ecological benefits, contributing to biodiversity and providing shade.
Nutritional and Health Features:
Breadfruit is a valuable source of dietary fibre, iron, potassium, and essential vitamins and carotenoids. It is low in fat and gluten-free, supporting cardiovascular and metabolic health. Potassium helps in maintaining blood pressure and managing diabetes risks. The tree's latex has traditional medicinal uses, especially in treating infections.
