Resource Mobilization

Protecting mangroves in coastal communities in Asia and the Pacific

Mangroves provide a wide array of benefits to coastal communities, as well as being valuable in terms of climate change mitigation. As fisheries resources dwindle, the livelihoods of many fishing communities in Asia are becoming unsustainable. At the same time, mangrove resources are being degraded by the associated impacts on fish stocks, both within mangrove areas and in the adjacent sea areas. The objective of the project was to develop a mechanism that would enable investors to responsibly promote mangrove conservation and restoration, carbon emission reduction and sustainable development through the provision of funding to local communities in the three project countries of Pakistan, Thailand and Viet Nam.

What did the project do

The project developed a low-cost mechanism that enables investors to responsibly promote mangrove conservation and restoration, carbon emission reduction and sustainable development through the provision of funding to local communities. A key purpose of the mechanism is to facilitate flows of funding to smaller mangrove areas where entry into voluntary and compliance markets for carbon is not economically feasible.

Impact

The mechanism developed by the project provides an alternative income for fisher folk, enabling a reduction of fishing effort and the regeneration of fish stocks. It facilitates mangrove conservation and restoration, the replenishment of fish stocks and livelihood development while providing public and corporate entities with an opportunity to invest in climate change mitigation and socioeconomic development.

Activities

  • An inception workshop was held in May 2015.
  • Missions were conducted to the three project countries, in September and December 2015.
  • Home-based research was carried out.
  • Regular interactions were conducted with mangrove officials and experts in the region.
  • Four interlinking MFF-FAO reports were finalized and published, after consultation with MFF and other stakeholders.
  • A final project workshop was held in December 2016 to disseminate project findings and identify further opportunities for piloting the mechanism.
