The Pastoralist Knowledge Hub is structured around three foundational pillars: Policy and Governance Support, Communication and Advocacy, and Networks. Each pillar addresses the unique challenges faced by pastoralists, ranging from improving policy frameworks and governance that affect their livelihoods to enhancing their visibility and voice in global forums.
By integrating these pillars, the Hub supports the development of pastoralist-friendly policies, fosters robust advocacy efforts, and strengthens the connections and partnerships among pastoral communities globally.
Policy and governance support
Pastoralism sustains millions of livelihoods through food production in highly variable environments but often faces marginalization and exclusion from policymaking processes. The Hub addresses these challenges by providing guidance, generating and disseminating knowledge, and supporting the development of pastoralist-friendly policies and frameworks.
Communication and advocacy
Visibility is essential to sustain the current advocacy for pastoralism. The Hub ensures the participation of pastoralists in global forums. It collaborates with partners and key stakeholders, including pastoralists, to advocate for sustainable pastoralism by sharing documents, studies, and information, jointly organizing events, and promoting pastoralist-friendly interventions and policies in global, regional, and national policy forums.
Networks
The voice of pastoralists is fundamental to achieving fair and sustainable development for pastoralist communities. The Hub integrates pastoralists by providing tools to establish a participation mechanism. This mechanism brings representatives of pastoral networks together to convey the views of pastoral communities on specific topics under discussion at the international level.
