Summary of standards and guidelines

A summary of the standards (based on updated school food regulations) includes the following:

Food and beverages unsuitable for sale in schools
  • Energy drinks, carbonated drinks, flavoured drinks (cold tea, ice tea), cola drinks, flavoured natural mineral drinks, flavoured syrups, flavoured drink powders, flavoured waters, fruit drink, fruit drink powder, natural mineral drinks with fruit, artificial sodas, fruit syrup, sports drinks (carbohydrate-electrolyte) beverage), fruit nectars, juice concentrates
  • Fries
  • Chips (potato, corn, shaped, etc.), crispy cookies
  • All types of chocolate (sold separately or added to products, chocolate chips, chocolate spreads andwafers (plain, filled, coated, etc.)
  • All types of candy  (jelly candies, hard candies, soft candy, filled-unfilled,coated, dragee, whole lollipops, etc.)
  • Creamy, chocolate filled, jelly cakes, biscuits and cakes (fresh cakes, eclairs, croissants, donuts, parfait, mosaic cake, muffin, cupcake etc.)
  • Pastry and syrup desserts (including dry baklava)
  • Raw meatballs
  • Black and green tea (except high schools)
  • Herbal teas
  • Caffeinated products (all caffeinated foods and beverages, coffee-style products, mocca, latte, capuccino, etc.)
  • Products containing guarana, guarana extract, added caffeine
  • Food and beverages containing sweeteners
  • Cream, coconut milk and cream
  • Products with the following food additives: Sunset yellow (E 110), Quinoline Yellow (E 104), Carmosine (E 122), Allura red (E 129), Tartrazine (E102), Ponzo 4R (E 124), and Titanium dioxide (E 171) 

Food and beverages suitable for sale in schools
  • Fruits, vegetables that can be consumed raw (in accordance with the season), salads (olive oil and lemon can be added)
  • Dried fruits (up to 30g, packaged, uncoated and without added sugar – figs, apricots, grapes, etc.)
  • Nuts (30g, packaged, unsalted, unsalted, added sugar-free, not in powder form,unshelled – walnuts, hazelnuts, etc.)
  • Freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice (without added sugar, maximum 250 mL)
  • Drinking milk (up to 240mL, UHT/pasteurized milk)
  • Yogurt (up to 200g, packed)
  • Ayran (maximum 250mL, packed)
  • Cheese (made from pasteurized milk, excluding melted cheeses and cheeses with added cream, maximum 60g)
  • All cheese types will be semi-skimmed, white cheeses will be reduced/less salty
  • Daily boiled eggs
  • Olives (maximum 25 g with low salt)
  • Seasoned breads (flavoured: nuts, dried fruits, oil seeds, spiced breads)
  • Whole wheat bread, whole wheat bread/whole wheat flour lavash, mixed grain bread etc.non-fat sandwiches made from products containing the following; Egg or cheese or Fresh tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, peppers, etc., excluding pickles. Vegetables
  • Drinking water (no added sugar or sweetener)
  • Natural mineral water
  • Natural spring water
  • Sugar-free gums (except sweetened gums)
Packaged foods approved for sale when they meet the following criteria
Cakes, biscuits, crackers, breakfast cereals, popcorn, etc. criteria
  • The total energy content of the product should not exceed ≤200kcal.
  • The energy of the product from oil should not exceed 35% of its total energy.
  • The energy of the product from saturated fat should not exceed 10% of its total energy.
  • Energy from natural and added sugar should not exceed 35% of its total energy.
  • The sodium content of the product should not exceed ≤200mg.
Ice cream, edible ice products, iced drinks, etc. criteria
  • In ice cream, milk ice, vegetable oil, milk ices, milk desserts, the energy of the product is ≤150kcal and saturated oil should not exceed ≤3g.
  • Edible iced products should contain more than 99% fruit juice, no added sugar, and the amount should be less than 125mL.
  • Crushed ice drinks should contain more than 99% fruit juice, no added sugar, and the amount should be less than 200mL.
Flavoured yoghurts, flavoured milks, fruit and vegetable juices, tea criteria
  • In drinking milk containing flavoring, sugar is used in the production; added sugar≤5g/100mL and total sugar (natural milk sugar and added sugar) ≤9.5g/100mL.
  • In yoghurts with flavorings in which sugar is used; total amount of sugar should be ≤12.5g/100g.
  • Fruit and vegetable juices: 100% fruit and vegetable juice, no added sugar, more than 250mL. It should not be large.
  • Tea in high schools should be no more than 375ml.
  • Honey (100% natural honey, maximum 10 gram package)
  • Jam and marmalade (extra traditional jam and traditional marmalade (minimum 45% fruit ratio), maximum10 gram pack)
  • Butter (pack of 10 grams maximum)
  • Turnip juice (spicy/non-spicy, maximum 150 mL), in 100mL; 0.3-0.75g of salt should be 120-300mg of sodium.
Foodstuffs prepared as snacks that are approved for sale when they meet the following criteria
  • Energy for pastry (1 large = 75g), toast (30g with cheddar or white cheese), bagel (1 small = 90g) content should be ≤250kcal, saturated fat content ≤5g and sodium content ≤400mg.
  • Plain cake (homemade/patisserie; 1 large slice = 60g) energy content ≤240kcal and saturated fat content ≤3g should be.
Hot and processed foodstuffs approved for sale when they meet the following criteria (per 100g)
  • For savoury pastries, pastries, pastas, pizzas, pita breads, baked potato products, rice and spaghetti, the energy content should be ≤250kcal, saturated fat content ≤5g and sodium content ≤400mg.
  • For meat products (burgers, meatballs, nuggets, canned fish products, canned turkey products, etc.), the energy content should be ≤250kcal, saturated fat content ≤5g and sodium content ≤500mg.
  • For processed meats (salami, pastrami, sausages, sausages, etc.), the energy content should be ≤ 250kcal, saturated fat content ≤5g and sodium content ≤750mg.
