School food global hub

Instructions to submit content

We want to learn your experience with the food you eat in your school, such as what you enjoy the most and what you feel needs to be improved for you to be able to have healthy, enjoyable and environmentally-friendly school food. We are looking for individual experiences as well as collective ones from schools.

To share your experience, you can choose one of the following ways: a photo album, a video, and/or a story. You can do this yourself or you can ask a caregiver to help you. Teachers and other school staff can also be involved in your video to share their different perspectives. Videos can also be submitted on behalf of a school or grade.

When planning your photo album, video or story, you could think about addressing some of these questions:

  1. Why do you like your school food?
  2. What is your favourite healthy school meal?
  3. What makes it difficult for you to eat in a healthy way during school time?
  4. What do you wish could be improved in your school food? For example, this could be the choice of food available, its quality and safety, the facilities for preparing and eating food, and so on.
  5. What could be done to make your school food more environment-friendly? This, for example, could be linked to avoiding food waste, reduce packaging, source locally or produce in school gardens, and so on.

  1. Send your photo album or video to [email protected]
  2. Or (if too heavy) upload your video to a cloud storage device like Google Drive, Dropbox or One Drive and share the link in an email to [email protected]
  3. Or share the video through We Transfer to [email protected]

Please remember to sign the subject release form, giving FAO the permission to use, reproduce, publish and distribute your video for non-commercial purposes. If you are under 18, your parent/legal guardian will need to sign this for you. Submitted material without the subject release form cannot be used.

For additional information, feel free to reach out to us sending an email to [email protected]

  • The submitted content will be featured in the relevant section of the “School food knowledge hub”.
  • If needed for editorial purposes, submitted products may be edited to ensure consistency and coherence with similar content.
  • The content of all the videos received will be used to inform a global process to improve the quality of school food.
  • Submitted products may also be used by FAO for other communication purposes.
Instructions by type of content

If photography is your thing, you can create a photo album of what you eat in school, your relationship with this food, and how the overall school food environment supports – or doesn’t! – your healthy diet.

Photos do not have to be professional, but we encourage you to share good quality photos. Moreover, you can think about sharing your photos with us on a regular basis, for example to show how the seasonality of food is reflected in your school’s menu.

If you’re more into videos, record one with your smartphone or other device, showing or describing your school food and its environment.

General
  • Video length: 30-90 seconds.
  • Record as many takes as needed, and send us your best one.
  • Languages: videos in English, Spanish, French and Italian are welcome.
Video
  • Keep your phone horizontal and at eye level, looking directly into the camera.
  • Don’t zoom in to adjust the framing, simply place the camera in the best position instead.
  • Ensure there is adequate lighting and avoid backlights (bright windows, lamps, etc. behind you).
  • Do not add music, logos and/or potentially-copyrighted items, or we won’t be able to use the video
  • Keep the phone/camera still, placing it somewhere stable (see some examples below).

Audio
  • Ensure the verbal message is clear.
  • Watch out for background noises: the space does not have to be absolutely silent, but avoid loud, constant or echoing noises.

If you have a story you would like to share, contact us describing your idea so we can support you in developing it. The story will have to focus on your own context and possibly reflect its peculiarities, and should include your own personal views, impressions and relationships with your school food.
