Policy Support and Governance Gateway

Coastal marine governance in Chile

The Coastal Marine Governance Project, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is strategically designed to focus on interventions that will enhance management and governance practices, strengthen institutions and human capital in target areas, and thus, contribute to the protection of valuable marine ecosystems while promoting responsible use.

It also aims to enhance the capacity of regional, municipal, and local institutions in marine planning, management, and governance. The goal is to empower these institutions and local communities to support the activities in the pilot sites, ensuring their long-term sustainability.

The project brings together coastal and land administrators from regional and municipal public institutions, community leaders in artisanal fishing and local tourism, as well as managers and non-governmental organizations. The objective is to create a shared vision for the coastal territory and jointly develop the necessary skills.
