30/06/2023

24 officers from national agencies in Madagascar attended a two-day workshop held by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the FAO global programme to support the implementation of the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary  international instruments to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The workshop was held in Antananarivo between the 1-2 June, and was attended by fisheries, labour, maritime and port officers together with members of the police and migration officers.

The workshop was held to support the country‘s process of establishing and formalizing an interagency mechanism for the effective implementation of the PSMA and complementary international instruments. The workshop was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry for Fisheries and Blue Economy and its Fisheries Directorate, within the framework of the Letter of Agreement signed with Stop Illegal Fishing.

Participants to the workshop agreed to request assistance from FAO on the legal aspect to better implement the provisions of the PSMA and related instruments to combat IUU fishing effectively.

Madagascar became a Party to the PSMA in 2017. The workshop was carried out through the BMZ project funded by Germany.
