Schools can contribute to making the right to food a reality. School food and nutrition programmes and policies can: 1) Improve students’ access to nutritious foods; 2) Encourage school enrolment, particularly for girls; 3) Provide education about food, sustainable agrifood systems and nutrition; 4) Promote local and more diversified farming; 5) Improve the livelihoods of neighbouring communities Countries can set nutrition standards for ensuring the quality and adequacy of foods consumed during school hours, so that school food and nutrition programmes can have a better impact on children’s diets. Safeguarding schoolchildren’s nutrition is a human rights issue.
