Objectives
  • To increase production and productivity in Horticulture, Cereals, Aquaculture, Livestock and relevant cross-cutting issues
  • To build the capacity of technical agricultural staff and farmers to adopt and promote the improved Chinese technologies.
  • To consolidate trade and investment linkages established in SSC phase 1
     
Key Result

Five (5) Chinese Experts and Eleven (11) Technicians were stationed in Uganda for a period of two years. The key results achieved are summarized below:

  • Over 3 000 farmers and 80 extension staff members trained in horticulture, livestock, aquaculture production and biogas construction. 
  • Facilitated US$ 220 million Chinese investment to set up the Kehong China-Uganda Agricultural Industrial Park.  China-Uganda Agricultural Cooperation Industrial Park consolidated in Luwero and Kalungu districts. 
  • Seven agricultural technology demonstration hubs established in various target districts i) Kabale for horticulture; ii) Mbarara for livestock; iii) Wakiso (Entebbe) for agribusiness; iv) Luwero for the Agricultural Industrial Park; iv) Nakaseke (Kapeka) for an integrated ecological agriculture farm; v) Budaka and Butaleja for rice–fish culture, hybrid rice, foxtail millet and agromachinery; and vi) Amuria for aquaculture and rice-fish culture.
  • Ten horticulture demonstrations were established in the districts of Kabale (three apple, two vegetables, one mushroom), Kisoro (one apple), Wakiso (one table grapes), Luwero (one table grapes) and Kampala (one mushroom).
  • Three sustainable business models developed on joint venture: i) hybrid rice of the Kehong Payero joint venture in Gulu district; ii) foxtail millet and hybrid rice in Butaleja district; and iii) sweet potato processing in Nakaseke. 
  • One sweet potato processing small-scale factory demonstration unit was established in Kapeka, Nakaseke district and one processed beef jerky, which was suitable for the Chinese market, was developed. 
  • One fish feed small-scale processing factory for demonstration established in Kapeka, Nakaseke istrict.
  • Three Chinese model and two local type biogas units for demonstration built in Nakaseke, Wakiso and Kabale districts.
  • Agromachinery for field preparations, and solar insect traps provided for demonstration in four target districts of Amuria, Budaka, Wakiso and Luwero.
