Upgrading the Sudanese Sesame-seed value chain

Gadaref, Sudan- The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a training course, funded by the Standard Trade Development Facility (STDF), and in collaboration with the UNIDO, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Agricultural Research Corporation, and Gedarif State Ministry of Production and Economic Resources. The training course was in the field of Training of Farmer Field School Facilitators (FFS) on Sesame Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), under the project, Upgrading the Sudanese Sesame-seed Value Chain, from the 23rd -27th July 2020. The trainees were 15 participants from the field of agriculture. A number of officials working in the field of agriculture attended the inauguration of the training course. The course aimed to introduce the participants to farmer field schools and good agricultural practices. Moreover, the course focused on increasing the capacity building of the trainees to play the role of facilitators, which will lead in contributing to increase the productivity of sesame seeds by enhancing the capacity building of farmers through FFS, leading them to apply good agricultural practices (GAPs) based on modern management principles, such as integrated pest management (IPM), responsible use of plant protection products and record keeping. The training course covered several topics including, curriculum for farmer field schools, good agricultural practices for sesame crop, risk management, the importance of teamwork, leadership and negotiation, diseases and pests of sesame crop.
