The pineapple value chain in Suriname – Analysis and strategy design 2019–2030

2026

The ASTA programme, led by FAO and UNIDO, supports the sustainable development of agrifood systems in developing countries. In Suriname, ASTA has focused on the pineapple value chain as a key sector for economic diversification, given the country’s reliance on extractive industries and growing interest in sustainable agriculture. Through a comprehensive analysis, ASTA identified market opportunities, sustainability hotspots, sector strengths and gaps across production, processing and marketing, and developed a 2030 vision with actionable strategies. The recommendations include strengthening cooperation among stakeholders, improving farming practices, supporting processing and market access, promoting private investment, and ensuring environmental sustainability and social inclusion. Overall, the initiative aims to increase productivity, create income and employment opportunities, and position Suriname’s pineapple sector competitively in local and international niche markets.
