The coconut value chain in Lagos State, Nigeria: analysis and strategy design 2023–2037

The FAO–UNIDO Agrifood Systems Transformation Accelerator (ASTA) supports the transformation of agrifood systems into more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient systems by translating strategic priorities into practical, scalable investment solutions. In Lagos State (Nigeria), ASTA, through a participatory process, has conducted a value chain analysis of the coconut value chain, which is dominated by smallholder farmers and small processors facing low productivity, aging plantations, weak processing capacity, and limited market access. Based on this analysis, ASTA has co-designed, with national stakeholders, a 15-year upgrading strategy covering production, processing, markets, policy, and infrastructure, including the creation of a cooperative model to strengthen input access, services, aggregation, and collective marketing. With an estimated investment of USD 5.4 million, the strategy aims to improve livelihoods, promote youth and women’s inclusion, and position Lagos State as a regional coconut hub in West Africa.
