The dairy and beef value chains in Bangladesh – Analysis and strategy design 2019–2024

2026

The analysis identified key constraints, underlying causes of underperformance and opportunities for sustainable transformation. Building on these findings, ASTA developed a comprehensive value chain upgrading strategy comprising enhanced business models, targeted investment opportunities, and complementary policy, institutional and governance measures. The strategy aimed to strengthen the competitiveness, inclusiveness and sustainability of the dairy and beef sectors by improving productivity, enhancing product quality and food safety, expanding market access, and fostering stronger linkages among producers, processors, traders and service providers to create more integrated and commercially viable value chains. The upgrading strategy focused on three objectives: (i) improving access to technologies and business models for small-scale producers and processors; (ii) enhancing the quality and safety of dairy products; and (iii) improving animal health and the quality and safety of beef products. Together, these interventions aimed to promote sustainable sector growth, increase incomes and employment, and stimulate investment.
