FAO Representation in United Arab Emirates

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Office in the United Arab Emirates

Welcome to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Office in the United Arab Emirates. The FAO Representation to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) opened its doors in 2005. Our partnership with the UAE has been instrumental in advancing sustainable agricultural practices and ensuring food security in the region and working towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and FAO: Partners in Sustainable Agricultural Development and Food Security

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been a steadfast partner of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since joining in 1973. Our collaboration has yielded remarkable achievements, with a shared commitment to sustainable growth, technological innovation, and food security.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) of the United Arab Emirates serves as the pivotal entity in the partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The collaboration between MOCCAE and the FAO is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to leading regional and international efforts in these vital areas.

Sheikh Zayed’s Vision

As H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, the Father of the Nation, aptly said: “Give me agriculture, and I will give you civilization.” His legacy inspires our joint efforts toward a hunger-free world.

Inception and Growth

Our joint efforts focus on the transformation of agri-food systems to achieve better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all, leaving no one behind. This collaboration is in line with the regional priorities identified by our member countries and the 2030 Agenda.

  • In 2005, the FAO Representation in the UAE was inaugurated.
  • Our partnership thrives on knowledge exchange and fostering strong alliances.

Background about FAO Vision

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) holds the responsibility as the custodian UN agency for 21 indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and it also contributes to an additional five indicators. These contributions span across SDGs 2, 5, 6, 12, 14, and 15. These goals form the core of FAO’s strategic framework and its overarching theory of change. Our work is primarily driven by three SDGs: SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

A Proactive Agenda for Food Security

FAO actively contributes to the implementation of the UAE National Food Security Strategy 2051. This visionary strategy aims to position the UAE as a global leader in food security. FAO collaborates with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government to ensure food security and sustainable agricultural development. This partnership focuses on:

  • Natural Resource Management: The UAE implements strategies to manage its water resources, a critical element in desert agriculture.
  • Fisheries and Aquaculture: These sectors contribute significantly to national food security, and their development is a key area of focus.
  • Food Safety and Quality Standards: The UAE prioritizes ensuring safe and high-quality food for its citizens through robust standards.
  • Policy and Regulatory Frameworks: Legal and regulatory frameworks govern the UAE’s agricultural sector, shaping its future.
