Against a backdrop of annual urban growth of over 4%, and with the aim of drawing up a territorial food plan, the elected representatives and stakeholders of the Ziguinchor municipality have joined forces with Grdr and CIRAD to carry out a diagnosis of the city's food system. The aim of this study, to be carried out between 2020 and 2021, is to describe the diversity and characteristics of the food environment in which households living in Ziguinchor are supplied and consume, as well as their food supply and consumption practices. It should be noted that the study period corresponds to a period of global pandemic, when sanitary measures and restrictions on mobility may have disrupted these practices.

This study shows the dynamism and density of food retailing in the city.
It shows that, alongside a few imported staple food products that are well entrenched in eating habits
(broken rice, vegetable oil, etc.), many products from the Lower Casamance, other regions of Senegal
Senegal or neighboring countries (Guinea and Guinea-Bissau) are available and consumed. This is particularly
This is particularly true of the Boucotte market, where most food purchases are made.
The study confirms that the food issue is primarily one of physical and economic accessibility. Territorial and economic inequalities in access to nutrient-dense food products (such as vegetables, fruit and fish) remain significant in Ziguinchor. These
are less available in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods than other products (notably
processed products), and the populations of these neighborhoods face material and economic
to get to the central market.
Finally, this work supports the hypothesis that the post-production-retailing sector
food retailing and street food in particular - offers employment and income opportunities
particularly for women.
