Projects

Carbon and Water Footprint (CWF) Initiative

The Carbon and Water Footprint (CWF) Initiative helps the banana industry optimize resources, reduce emissions, and improve efficiency. It provides a standardized, evolving tool for assessing environmental impact, supporting producers in adopting sustainable practices, complying with regulations, and informing stakeholders on climate action.

Banana Occupational Health and Safety Initiative (BOHESI)

This initiative aims to enhance sustainability in banana production by improving occupational health, safety standards, and resource access for farmers and workers, fostering better labor conditions and environmental resilience.

TR4 Global Network

The TR4 Global Network (TR4GN) is a global platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange on Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4). It provides science-based resources, practical tools, and capacity-building materials to support stakeholders in prevention and control efforts, fostering partnerships and coordinated action against the disease.

Good practices in the banana industry

This portal presents examples of good practices in the banana industry, covering environmental sustainability, standards and certifications, occupational health and safety, and social responsibility. It highlights initiatives that reduce environmental impact, promote responsible pesticide use, ensure compliance with certifications, enhance worker safety, and support social equity across the banana production chain.

Living Wage Advocacy Initiative (LIWIN)

The project aims to establish living wage benchmarks to support future wage negotiations and guide minimum wage-setting efforts in the banana sector of each country.

Soil Doctors Pilot Project

This pilot brought FAO’s Global Soil Doctors Programme to small-scale banana growers in Colombia, with the aim of strengthening their technical capacities in sustainable soil management. Using the programme’s cascade learning approach and adapting its educational materials to the realities of banana production, 47 farmers were trained as soil doctors and returned to their communities, where they shared what they had learned, reaching more than 235 additional farmers. The Secretariat and its partners are now exploring opportunities to expand or replicate this pilot in other regions and producing countries.
