FOOD LOSS AND WASTE

Every year, one-third of all food produced for human consumption gets lost or wasted, that is 1.3 billion tonnes of food and could feed 1.26 billion hungry people every year.

Food loss happens when food gets spoiled or damaged before people can eat it. For example, imagine a load of tomatoes getting crushed and bruised as they travel from a farm in a truck. Food waste happens when food gets thrown away. Have you ever noticed that in restaurants, people often do not finish their food, so plates that are still half full are emptied into the garbage? That is an example of food waste. Food loss and waste is the overall decrease in the food originally intended for people to eat, regardless of the cause.

The Food Loss and Waste Challenge Badge is designed to help educate children and young people about the impact of food loss and waste on people and the planet. The booklet is designed to help you develop an educational programme for your class or group.
