Youth and the United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA)

Challenge Badges

Developed in collaboration with United Nations agencies, civil society and other organizations, YUNGA Challenge Badges aim to raise your awareness, educate and motivate you to change your behaviour and become an active agent of change in your local community. The series can be used by teachers in school classes as well as by youth leaders, especially Guide or Scout groups. Challenge Badge activities are both educational – and fun! We want you to enjoy learning about how to make our world a more sustainable, fairer place!

No. You do not need to complete every activity included in a Challenge Badge. Each badge contains a combination of mandatory and optional activities, with specific requirements that vary depending on the topic.

To qualify for a certificate, participants should complete the required activities indicated in the Badge and follow the guidance provided in the relevant publication.

Once you have completed the required activities for a Challenge Badge, you can apply for a certificate of completion by submitting the online certificate request form.

After your submission has been reviewed, you will receive a certificate recognizing your achievement that you can share with your group.

Each Challenge Badge contains a guide on how to use it in its beginning. Generally, they are composed of a background information section focused on the topic and a wide range of educational activities, of which some are mandatory and other optional. Participants are encouraged to learn about the theme, complete activities, take action in their communities and reflect on what they have learned.

Group leaders can select the activities that best suit their participants, available time and local circumstances. Activities are also designed for different target groups. The badges can be used in schools, youth groups, community programmes or informal learning settings.

Anyone working with children and young people can implement a YUNGA Challenge Badge. This includes teachers, youth leaders, Scout and Guide leaders, educators, community organizations, youth clubs, non-governmental organizations, families and other interested groups.

Challenge Badges are designed to be flexible and can be adapted to different educational settings, age groups and local contexts.

YUNGA Challenge Badges are educational resources designed to help children and young people learn about global issues and take action in their communities. Each badge focuses on a specific theme, such as biodiversity, climate change, forests, nutrition, soils or oceans, and includes a variety of activities, games, discussions and projects.

Challenge Badges encourage participants to explore real-world issues, develop practical skills and contribute to a more sustainable future through learning and action.
