Youth and the United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA)

Creating Behavioural Change

At YUNGA, we believe that awareness alone is not enough. Lasting change happens when young people are empowered to act, practise new behaviours, and make sustainable choices part of their everyday lives.

Our educational programmes are informed by behavioural science and insights and designed to make sustainable actions Easy, Engaging, Practical and Social.

Our Behavioural Science Checklist

We apply a set of proven behavioural science tactics that help learners adopt and maintain positive behaviours:

Make it Easy: Set clear goals, plan small doable steps, and prompt youth to action.

Make it Engaging: Build positive identities, make learning fun and interactive, provide positive feedback, and strengthen connections to nature.

Make it Practical: Build action skills, support habit formation, and encourage long-term practice.

Make it Social: Involve families, engage experts and communities, highlight positive social norms, encourage peer competition, public commitments, and recognizing success.

How We Design Our Programmes

To maximise impact, we encourage educators to design YUNGA programmes with behaviour change in mind from the very beginning. A simple, evidence-based process can help:

1. Select the topic.

2. Map the behaviours that matter.

3. Prioritise behaviours with the greatest impact.

4. Understand learners, their motivations and context.

5. Identify barriers and motivators.

6. Design behaviourally informed activities.

7. Monitor progress, evaluate impact and improve continuously.
