Building capacity in Southern Africa to enable effective disaster risk management through regional systems for inter-agency anticipatory action using a multi-hazard, multi-sectoral approach in Mozambique & Zimbabwe

Objective: Livelihoods, food and nutrition security of vulnerable households is protected by anticipating the occurrence and impacts of shocks though harmonised triggers, jointly agreed actions and coordinated implementation frameworks.

Description: The long-term goal of the Action is to reduce the impact of climate induced shocks on food security, lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations in the region through focused capacity-building activities targeted at key DRM stakeholders and institutions at the regional levels, including national, district and community levels in two selected pilot countries, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, in order to enable them to implement anticipatory actions (AA) with the existing early warning systems and other impact-based forecasting information. The Action will also ensure the generation of rigorous evidence for anticipatory actions, which will contribute to stronger programme design and advocacy material

Description: The programme promotes environmental sustainability in ACP countries by strengthening environmental governance and the implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). The target MEAs are the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS) and indirectly to the United Nations Convention to Combat Dissertification (UCCD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The programme promotes ecosystem-based best practices and approaches for agriculture and the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity that ensure environmental sustainability while increasing productivity.

Objectives: Raise awareness and educate the population, professionals and policy makers on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Improving understanding of the AMR burden and antimicrobial use patterns through surveillance. Reduce the need for antimicrobials by improving infection prevention and control, farm practices and biosecurity, water sanitation and hygiene, and immunisation. Improve controlled access and optimise the use of antimicrobials in humans and animals Sustainable investment into AMR and research into alternatives to antimicrobials.

Enhanced Resilience for Vulnerable Households in Zimbabwe (ERVHIZ)

Objective: To contribute to the well-being of households in vulnerable situations in the face of economic and climate induced shocks and stresses in Zimbabwe

Description: The project focuses on agriculture, nutrition and WASH interventions coupled with early warning anticipatory actions to protect lives and productive assets against the impact of economic and climate hazards. The project is implemented in six districts in the Matabeleland South province. FAO and UNICEF integrate interventions with the aim of contributing to the well-being of households in vulnerable situations in the face of economic and climate induced shocks and stresses in Zimbabwe. The strategy is to assist vulnerable households in recovering farming and livestock activities. A strong focus on adopting principals of agro-ecology is part of the intervention, together with improving farmer access to markets for livestock and other agricultural produces. Incorporating community Water and Sanitation Hygiene interventions which are adapted to the local context will support sustainable pathways to resilient livelihoods.

Short Description: The FAO Green Jobs for Rural Youth Employment project (GJ4RYE), funded by KOICA, aims to promote approaches that create green job opportunities for rural youths. The project utilizes a strategy that provides youths with transferable and valuable soft and sector-specific skills in the green agriculture and economy sectors. These skills include problem identification and solving, business literacy, communication, teamwork and technical skills. In addition to these skills, youths are provided with two-year support through business mentorship and seed money for their green business start-ups or waged employment opportunities in green Public Employment Programmes (PEPs). Creating green jobs in agriculture can contribute to social, economic, and environmental sustainability through innovative solutions such as agroforestry, agroecology, climate-smart agriculture, and bioenergy. These emerging sectors provide opportunities for rural communities and youth to contribute to the transition towards a just and green economy.

Objective: To reduce poverty and hunger among selected smallholder farmers through effective market participation

Short Description: The project will enable the establishment of a pilot smallholder out-grower model. The model will be scalable and replicable in other micro-regions. An out-grower model hosted by an ARDA estate serving as the nucleus farm, will be developed. Smallholder farmers will be supported to commercially produce the selected horticultural fresh produce for both local and export markets. Value added products will be promoted for export, thus the initiative will support agro-processing, linking farmers to processing technologies and equipment.

Description: 

The overall objective of the project is to improve household resilience to 'shocks’ by protecting their livestock assets. This will be achieved through a combination of disease management and control measures (to mitigate the impact of Foot and Mouth Disease & Tick-borne diseases) as well as enhancing feed and nutrition of livestock to improve resistance to disease. The project will complement efforts of the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) in animal disease control for communities in selected districts which indicate substantial risk in relation to the animal diseases stated above. Historically women and youths have been shown to face barriers in accessing social protection schemes hindering their capacity to utilize these. The project is going to make special emphasis in the inclusion of women and youths making sure that they are at least 50 percent of direct beneficiaries in all selected interventions.

Description: One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) is a programme launched by FAO to promote at global, regional and local levels the Special Agricultural Products with unique qualities and special characteristics that can contribute to the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind. In placing the production, distribution and marketing models of smallholders and family farming at the centre of interventions, the OCOP helps countries leverage their potential and identify the Special Agricultural Products adapted to their agroecological production systems and national or cultural heritage, ensuring improved access to stable markets and acting as a key entry point for reaching their defined priorities. The project will support countries in enhancing food production efficiency, reducing environmental and social impacts, maximizing benefits for farmers and food value chain actors, and promoting diversified food habits for improved food security and nutrition.

Protecting Agricultural Livelihoods against the Anticipated Impacts of El Nino induced drought in Zimbabwe

Objective: The projected impact of drought and associated shocks on crop and animal production and associated livelihoods among vulnerable farmers is mitigated

Duration: 2023 - 2024

Description: The project aims to mitigate the impacts of the forecast drought by protecting productive assets, including crops and livestock of vulnerable households in Beitbridge, Gwanda and Matobo districts.  The targeted farmers will be supported with a composite package of inputs, tools and training in regenerative agricultural practices and water harvesting techniques. The project will collaborate with the Scaling-up Early Warning Early Action (EWEA) for agriculture and the “Enhanced Resilience for Vulnerable Households in Zimbabwe (ERVHIZ)” project to support delivery of rehabilitation of water points and farmers trainings in regenerative agricultural practices. Early warning messages will be disseminated covering the three districts in all the areas reached by the two community radio stations. In addition, the project will support the procurement and distribution of drought-tolerant seeds, organic enhanced basal fertilizer and tools to 1,000 households. Finally, the project will support 1,000 farmers with feed and nutrition interventions for livestock.

Description: The Digital Villages Initiative (DVI) is an FAO corporate programme aiming to combat hunger, poverty and inequality by fostering digital rural transformation.
