FAO (2011) APFIC/FAO Regional consultative workshop “Implications of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture: challenges for adaptation and mitigation in the Asia-Pacific Region” 24–26 May 2011, Kathmandu, Nepal. FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok, Thailand. RAP Publication 2011/17, 52 pp.   It is now widely recognized that the effects of climate change will impact the fisheries sector, and result in increased uncertainty in the supply of fish from capture fisheries and aquaculture. This document presents case studies of the policy, governance and institutional issues of marine protected areas (MPAs) in Brazil, India, Palau and Senegal. It is the first of four in a global series of case studies on MPAs. An initial volume provides a synthesis and analysis of all the studies. In the tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia, mangrove and seagrass habitats provide habitat for a wide range of species and plants, for some or all of their lifecycle. Many of these species are exploited for food and are the target of both artisanal and commercial fisheries. Mangroves provide a wide range of ecosystem services which are incidental to fisheries production, but important to coastal environments and the livelihoods of coastal populations. Mangroves provide...

This report showcases examples of actions taken by small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers in Asia to restore the productivity of aquatic ecosystems. Small-scale fishers and fish farmers include some of the world’s most marginalized and impoverished people groups, yet their harvests account for over half of the world’s aquatic food production. The marine, coastal and freshwater ecosystems their livelihoods depend upon are degraded from human impacts and further at risk from climate change.
