Supporting projects and partnerships to promote responsible fisheries

What problem did it address, where?

The Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries was unanimously adopted by FAO Member States in 1995. FAO member countries subsequently requested the Organization to respond to the special requirements of developing countries through an interregional assistance programme for its implementation. FishCode was thus established by the FAO Fisheries department as a special programme of global partnerships to promote responsible fisheries and currently manages activities.

The overall objective of FishCode is to raise the economic, social and nutritional benefits obtained from fisheries and aquaculture, especially in developing countries, through the adoption of responsible development, management and conservation practices, including improved institutional and legal arrangements. FishCode regularly publishes regional and local reviews, holds specialized workshops and seeks out new donor arrangements.

Under the FishCode framework, a FishCode Trust finances activities to promote improved understanding and application of any and all aspects of the Code. FishCode teams different partnerships allowing for an array of FishCode projects to draw upon FAO's multidisciplinary technical know-how and worldwide experience in addressing issues and problem areas requiring immediate attention in order for strategic Code aims to be achieved.

Where next?

Priority areas focusing on responsible fisheries actions can be explored under FishCode in consultation with interested donors with a view towards the formulation of projects for specific countries or groups of countries, or for particular subregional or regional fisheries management organizations or arrangements.
