Environment Statistics

Collecting, Analyzing and Disseminating data, one Country at a time!

Official Data Collection from Countries, Analysis and Dissemination

The environment statistics team collects through FAOSTAT Questionnaires, analyzes and disseminates national data from member countries on:

Data collection, analysis and dissemination in FAOSTAT is conducted in annual cycles, in three phases spanning the period October-July, and comprising:

  • Joint Questionnaire Dispatch (October)
  • Data analysis and gap filling (November through June)
  • Peer review and dissemination (July)

Land-use, Irrigation and Agricultural Practices

Data on agricultural land-use are valuable for conducting studies on a various perspectives concerning agricultural production, food security and for deriving cropping intensity among others uses. Indicators derived from the land-use categories can also elucidate the environmental sustainability of countries’ agricultural practices. FAOSTAT Land-use statistics contain a wide range of information on variables that are significant for: understanding the structure of a country’s agricultural sector; making economic plans and policies for food security; deriving environmental indicators, including those related to investment in agriculture and data on gross crop area and net crop area which are useful for policy formulation and monitoring.

The WORLD ACCORDING TO FAOSTAT. LAND USE 2016: DID YOU KNOW?

  • The total world land area is 13.5 billion ha, of which:
  •    4.9 billion ha are agricultural land (37% of the total area)
  •    4.0 billion ha are forest land (31% of the total area)
  •    4.6 billion ha are ''other land'', i.e., deserts, urban areas, glaciers, etc.
  • The total area of inland waters (lakes, rivers) is 444 million ha (3% of the total land area)

Chemical and Mineral Fertilizers

The new fertilizer datasets apply a revised methodology and new dissemination formats. Detailed methodology notes on the new fertilizer dataset can be found in FAOSTAT, with information on Fertilizers by Nutrient, and Fertilizers by Product.

The WORLD ACCORDING TO FAOSTAT. FERTILIZERS 2016: DID YOU KNOW?

  • The total fertilizer nitrogen (N) applied to agricultural land is 110 million tonnes
  • The total fertilizer phosphate (P2O5) applied to agricultural land is 46 million tonnes
  • The total fertilizer potash (K2O) applied to agricultural land is 39 million tonnes

Pesticides

The FAOSTAT Pesticides Use database refers to the quantity of pesticides applied on agricultural land for crops and seeds treatment and protection. Data are expressed in metric tons of active ingredients. Pesticides refer to insecticides, mineral oils, herbicides, fungicides and bactericides, fungicides, plant growth regulators, rodenticides and any other substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying or controlling any pest, including vectors of human or animal disease, unwanted species of plants or animals causing harm during or otherwise interfering with the production, processing, storage, transport or marketing of food, agricultural commodities, wood and wood products or animal feedstuffs, or substances which may be administered to animals for the control of insects, arachnids or other pests in or on their bodies. The term includes substances intended for use as a plant growth regulator, defoliant, desiccant or agent for thinning fruit or preventing the premature fall of fruit, and substances applied to crops either before or after harvest to protect the commodity from deterioration during storage and transport.

The WORLD ACCORDING TO FAOSTAT. PESTICIDES USE 2016: DID YOU KNOW?

  • The total amount of active ingredients in pesticides used in agriculture was 4.1 million tonnes
