Food Security and Consumption Statistics from National Household Income and Expenditure Surveys (HIES).
FAO statistics organized, in collaboration with the INEC, the Ministry of Agriculture and FITTACORI of Costa Rica and the FAO Representation in Costa Rica and the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (FAORLC), a National Demonstration Centre (NDC) on food security and consumption statistics using food consumption and income data gathered in Household Income and Expenditure Surveys for countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in April 2008.
Two country officers were invited, one from the National Statistics Office and the other from the office responsible for follow-up to the Millennium Development Objectives, in particular the national agency responsible for monitoring the food security situation.
To strengthen capacity for the statistical analysis of data on food consumption and income in order to assess food security in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
To compile statistics on food consumption from existing data collected in HIESs, applying FAO methodology and standard statistical and software procedures.
To provide an opportunity for the horizontal transfer of experiences in the production and use of food security statistics between participating countries.
