Food and Agriculture Statistics

Food and Agriculture Statistics support member countries efforts nd the national statistical strategies in collecting, analysing, producing and disseminating timely and highly quality statistics data to strengthen their national statistical systems as well as to increase member's statistical capabilities and other related activities.

Areas of Work

The Food Security and Nutrition Statistics develops and advocates for the implementation of methodologies and standards as well as generating food security and nutrition statistics.

The Economic Statistics addresses statistics related to the domains of: prices of agricultural commodities (producer and consumer prices), investments in agriculture (government expenditure, credit to agriculture, foreign direct investments and Official Development Assistance) and macroeconomic indicators (Agriculture GDP, capital stock in agriculture).

FAO’s Environment  Statistics develops and publishes methodologies for computing harmonized and internationally comparable statistics and indicators in the agri-environment domain. This includes the generation and dissemination of statistics and indicators on: land use and land cover, use of fertilizers, use of pesticides and climate change statistics (emissions of agriculture, temperature change).

The Social Statistics produces and disseminates rural livelihoods indicators obtained from household surveys, through the RuLIS (Rural Livelihoods Information System) initiative, in partnership with the World Bank and IFAD.

Crops and Livestock Statistics provides essential global food and agricultural data covering the domains of: crops and livestock production, agricultural trade and the compilation of food balance sheets (FBS). Through the FBS exercise, comprehensive, detailed, global annual data on primary and processed crops and livestock are disseminated, covering production, trade, stocks, and food losses.
